If youre working on a rigorous singing schedule, check out these tips to stay vocally healthy from voice teacher Elaina R Anyone who’s ever eaten too much at Thanksgiving dinner knows that there is definitely too much of a good thing. This applies to singing as well! Singing, in my opinion, is one of the most enjoyable activities in the world. But just like eating too much makes you feel sick, singing too much has very real physical repercussions that can prevent you from singing more   sometimes even permanently. As a full-time professional singer, I sing a lot. I recently had a day where I had to sing for six hours. Even so, I haven’t had any vocal health problems since I was an undergraduate. Here’s why I have to be careful and what I do to keep my cords healthy. The Dangers of Singing Too Much Since your vocal cords are a part of your body, singing too much has many of the same effects as overusing any other body part. Imagine that you’ve been clapping for hours. What would happen to your hands? They would likely be red and swollen. If you kept clapping despite the swelling, your hands would eventually become very painful and develop calluses and blisters. They might even start to bleed (ouch). This same thing can happen to your vocal cords. The first step is vocal cord swelling. If you continue to sing with swollen or strained vocal cords,  you can develop nodules (calluses), polyps (blisters), or hemorrhaging (bloody cords). Treatment for these issues includes vocal rest, vocal therapy, and, in severe cases, surgery. Any of these issues, if not treated, can permanently damage your singing and speaking voice. Vocal Health  as a Singer Strained vocal cords (and damaging your voice)  may sound scary, but it can be avoided. I’m able to sing all day, every day without injury because I am constantly thinking about my vocal health. Staying healthy as a singer is much like staying healthy as an athlete, and following these rules can be the difference between a happy voice and an incapacitated one. Stay Hydrated I chug a glass of water as soon as I get up in the morning, and I carry a water bottle around with me everywhere. Hydrated vocal cords are nice and plump (and thus less prone to injury). Get Enough Sleep You don’t need me to tell you that your body functions better when you get enough sleep. Fatigue affects your vocal cords just like it affects the rest of you. Exercise Good singers have to be very in touch with their bodies, and physical exercise helps you  develop kinesthetic awareness. Exercise also helps alleviate tension, especially tension associated with sitting at a desk for long periods of time. This modern tension often centers around the throat, and throat tension is terrible for singing. Shaking your body out of this rigid mode can work wonders for your singing. Address Allergies and Acid Reflux I have seasonal allergies, so I take medication and use nasal sprays to alleviate post-nasal drip. Post-nasal drip is when mucus drips onto your vocal cords, irritating them and sometimes  causing vocal issues. If you have allergies, you need to be aware of this and take appropriate precautions. I’m lucky enough not to suffer from acid reflux, but many singers do. Acid reflux bathes the vocal cords in stomach acid, which is as horrible for the voice as you would expect. Please see a doctor immediately if you think you have acid reflux. Warm Up Just like athletes stretch before vigorous exercise, singers must warm up before diving into difficult music. I warm up every morning while puttering around the house   it’s second nature now, and it means my voice is always ready to go. The Most Important Rule for Singers I saved the best for last here. If an athlete has poor  technique (an improper gait for a runner, a bad swing for a batter), they end up injuring themselves. Same goes for singing. If you don’t learn good vocal technique, you will probably end up in vocal therapy at some point. But if you work with your voice teacher to improve your technique, you will learn how to sing better  overall. Your stamina will build and you will be less likely to hurt yourself. The original aired on TV3 between 2011 and 2013. The remake was aired by Fox in the US.The American version just isn't as good as the original. (Source: 1662222)The plot:It covers the story of a group of teenagers living in a paediatric ward in a hospital. The real heroes are the young patients and not the doctors, unlike w hat you’re probably used to in series taking place in hospitals.The characters, despite their situation, are full of hope and life. As Albert Espinosa put it, “You don’t die in hospitals due to illness, but boredom”. This isn't a sitcom but rather a dramedy! The way it blends comedic elements with the drama in a dysfunctional social environment is incredible.TV not your thing?Check out some of the best Spanish music.Spanish Series: Vis a VisCreated by Alex Pina (La Casa de Papel), this series was broadcast on Antena 3 in 2015. Antena 3 cancelled the show but it was picked up by Fox Spain in 2018.The plot:A young woman falls in love with her boss and ends up imprisoned for committing accounting crimes because of him. She ends up in the Cruz del Sur Prison for four different crimes.She needs to learn more about life in prison. She learns that there’s a large sum of money hidden somewhere that was never found. One of the culprits of this crime is in prison with her.Without tr ying, she ends up finding a clue. With more and more foreign series coming to Netflix, you can stop watching American movies on Netflix or TV series like Daredevil, Breaking Bad, House of Cards, or It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia and instead, binge watch some of the great Spanish series or new TV shows streaming on Netflix or HBO. Don't forget you can also watch on mobile devices, meaning they're great for practising on your commute, for exampl e.While most of the best new TV shows and best movies that you've heard of are American, don't forget that you can get a Spanish sketch comedy, scripted drama, detective and crime series and that you can also find the best shows from Spanish primetime TV and stuff for both the big and small screen.Of course, keep in mind that Spain and Latin America don't have the financial clout behind their series or movies so don't expect these shows and films to be like the Sopranos, Sense8, Bloodline, the Good Wife, Arrested Development, Jessica Jones, or even Bojack Horseman!You should understand that you won't get the polish in Hispanic series and movies that you do from Hollywood blockbusters. Chloroplast Chloroplast: Chloroplast can be defined as one of three types of plastids, characterized by its high concentration of chlorophyll, the other two types, the leucoplast and the chromoplast, contain little chlorophyll and do not carry out photosynthesis. Plastid definition:Plastids are double membrane bound semi-autonomous organelles present in all living plant cells and photosynthetic protists. Chloroplast characteristics: It has a double membrane which encloses a fluid-filled region called the stroma. Embedded in the stroma is a complex network of stacked sacs. Each stack is called a granum and each of the flattened sacs which make up the granum is called a thylakoid. The thylakoid membrane, that encloses a fluid-filled thylakoid interior space, contains photosynthetic pigments. There are many grana in each chloroplast which are interconnected by unstacked stromal lamellae. The lipids of the thylakoid membrane have a distinctive composition. About 80% lipids are uncharged mono- and digalactosyl diacylglycerol and only about 10% are phospholipids. Functions of Chloroplast: Photosynthesis: Photosynthesis is a photochemical process by which the green plants convert the light energy into chemical energy in the form of reducing power and ATP, and use these chemicals to drive carbon dioxide fixation. Light is harvested by a specialized pigment called chlorophyll which is located in choloroplast. Chlorophyll: Chlorophyll, a light-absorbing pigment, contains a polycyclic, planar tetrapyrrole ring structure. Chlorophyll is a lipid soluble pigment. It has the following important features: The central metal ion in chlorophyll in Mg2+ Chlorophyll has a cyclopentane ring fused to pyrrole ring III The propionyl group on a ring IV of chlorophyll is esterified to a long-chain tetraisoprenoid alcohol. In chlorophyll a and b, it is phytol.. Oxygenic photosynthetic organisms contain different types of chlorophyll molecules like Chl a, Chl b, Chl c, and Chl d. There chlorophyll molecules differ by having different substituent groups on the tetrapyrrole ring. An-oxygenic photosynthetic organisms contain bacteriochlorphyll molecules. They are related to chlorophyll molecules. Accessory pigments: Besides the major light-absorbing chlorophyll molecules, there are two groups of accessory pigments which absorb light in the wavelength region, where chlorophylls do not absorb energy. The two types of accessor pigments are carotenoids and phycobillins. Location of photosynthetic pigments: In oxygenic photosynthetic organisms, photosynthetic pigments are found in thylakoid membranes. In anoxygenic photosynthetic organisms such as green Sulphur bacteria, photosynthetic pigments are found in plasma membrane and vesicles called chlorosomes attached to the plasma membrane. In the purple Sulphur bacteria, the bacteriochlorophylls are located in invaginations of the plasma membrane called chromatophores. Ultra-structure of chloroplast: The chloroplasts are covered by two plasma membranes. Each membrane of the chloroplast is tri-laminar and lipo-proteinous. The contents of chloroplast are heterogeneous. They consist of: The matrix or stroma: The internal space of the chloroplasts is occupied with a liquefied and transparent material called as the matrix or the stroma. It is the site where grana and inter-grana stay embedded. The grana: The chloroplasts comprises of many granular and chlorophyll containing structures, known as the grana. The size of the grana may vary from 0.3 - 1.7 microns. The chloroplasts may sometimes consist of 40 to 60 grana in the matrix. Each granum is further made of 10 to 100 dice-like, overlaid, membranous sections called as thylakoids. Each thylakoid is disconnected from the stroma or the matrix of the chloroplast by its membranes. Concept of photosynthetic unit: In 1932, Robert Emerson, and William Arnold provided the first evidence for the cooperation of many chlorophyll molecules in energy conversion during photosynthesis. They suggested that not all the chlorophyll molecules in a chloroplast were directly involved in the conversion of light energy into chemical energy. Using suspensions of the alga Chlorella and flashing lights of very short duration a saturating intensity, they determined the minimum amount of light needed to produce maximal oxygen production during photosynthesis. Based on the number of chlorophyll molecules present in the preparation, they calculated that one molecule of oxygen was being released during a brief flash of light for every 2500 molecules of chlorophyll present. It was later shown that a minimum of 8 photons must be absorbed to produce one molecule of oxygen and for this about 300 or so chlorophyll molecules act together as one photosynthetic unit in which only one member of the group- the reaction center chlorophyll- actually transfers electrons to an electron acceptor. The majority of the chlorophyll molecules serve as an antenna complex, collecting light and transferring the energy to the reaction center, where the photochemical reaction takes place.Chloroplast

If you have been anointed manager, you surely must know that there are things you are responsible for that you’d rather not do. The highest priority item on that list of tough things to do is dealing with an employee who is a continuous performance problem. It not only impacts business but when management simply lets someone run amok, the ranks resent it and some will join in. This is not how you want to run the business. Countless managers and executives, for all the toughness they may bring to the role, often turn into complete pansies when it comes to dealing with a problem employee. Are we having fun yet? In order to keep that tough-minded veneer intact, here are some things you can do to address employee performance issues: Set performance expectations. Every employee needs to hear from you exactly what their performance should be and how you expect to measure them. Once you set a clear direction, then ongoing conversations are easier to conduct. If they are headed for the ditch, you can let them know before it gets too out of hand. Act quickly. When you see an issue, you need to jump on it quickly while the details are fresh in your mind and theirs. Make a script. One of the biggest issues most managers face is difficulty in knowing how to start the conversation and what to say. It’s easier to do if you think through the key points you want to make, jot those points down and use your notes while you discuss them with the employee. Don’t be vague. Make sure you say early in the conversation, “There is an issue with your performance.” Short, sweet and no room to misunderstand. Give examples. Don’t just say there is a problem; be prepared to give examples that reinforce your observations. Stay calm. Sometimes wimpy managers have to get seriously ticked off in order to take action. Usually, at that point, they have let things get out of control. No one listens to a yelling person. You will lose your effectiveness. You will also lose respect from other employees if they realize this is how you function. Ask them to recap their understanding. In order for anything to change, you have to know they heard AND understood your message. Ask them to recap what you said and what they will be doing differently. Schedule follow-up. You can’t just toss a scud missile at the employee and think your job is done. While you are together, schedule a  time to reconvene. Appointed follow-up will keep you both accountable. Repetition is key. Keep in mind that the employee did not come to work for you with the intention of doing poor work. However, they may have picked up bad habits or haven’t been adequately trained. To get them on the right track will require your sustained focus and numerous follow-ups before the new behavior is sustained. If you aren’t dealing with the performance problems, you are creating numerous issues for yourself and those around you. While this might rank right up there with a root canal, you can reduce the pain with a few thoughtful actions. Being a leader is one of the most rewarding things that you can do.
